Dive Into Summer: 5 Great Swimming Spots in Ottawa

Dive Into Summer: 5 Great Swimming Spots in Ottawa

June 19, 2025

One of the best parts of living in Ottawa — especially near Mooney’s Bay — is the easy access to waterfront fun all summer long.

Whether you're a morning swimmer, a beach volleyball enthusiast, or simply love relaxing by the water, there’s no shortage of places to cool off when the temperature rises.

At The Docks at Mooney’s Bay, you’re not just steps from your own scenic beach — you’re also a short drive from some of the city’s top swimming destinations. Here are five fantastic places to take a dip in Ottawa this summer, including our very own Mooney’s Bay Beach.

1. Mooney’s Bay Beach

Location: Right outside your door at The Docks
Water: Rideau River
Lifeguards: Yes

This is Ottawa’s most iconic summer beach - and for good reason. With shady picnic spots, soft sand and beautiful views of the Rideau River, Mooney’s Bay is the ultimate staycation destination.

During the summer months, the beach is fully supervised by lifeguards, and the water quality is monitored daily. But there’s more to Mooney’s Bay than just the water — it’s a full day-out destination.

Grab a bite at the on-site canteen, rent a paddleboard or kayak, and explore the calm waters of the river. Join a game of beach volleyball or take a stroll through the nearby park trails. There’s also a large playground and splash pad, making it a great spot for families with kids.

The beach often hosts community events, fitness classes, and even festivals throughout the summer, adding to the vibrant atmosphere right outside your door. Whether you're catching up with friends over a picnic by the water or starting your day with a peaceful paddle, Mooney’s Bay makes it easy to enjoy the best of summer — and when you live at The Docks, it’s just steps from home.

2. NCC River House

Location: East Ottawa
Water: Ottawa River
Lifeguards: Yes

Looking to explore a unique urban swimming experience beyond Mooney’s Bay?

The NCC River House, located on the Ottawa River just off the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway, is Ottawa’s newest waterfront destination. This beautifully restored heritage boathouse now features Ottawa’s first supervised river swim dock, complete with a floating dock, swim ladder, and lifeguards on duty throughout the summer.

In addition to swimming, the River House includes public washrooms, outdoor showers, a café, and a spacious patio with stunning waterfront views — a perfect spot to relax after a swim. Whether you're heading there solo or meeting friends, the River House offers a refreshing, well-designed waterfront retreat that blends recreation with community charm.

3. Britannia Beach

Location: West Ottawa (Britannia Area)
Water: Ottawa River
Lifeguards: Yes

A beloved destination for many swimmers, Britannia Beach sits beside the Britannia Yacht Club along the Ottawa River. This charming west-end gem offers a broad sandy shoreline, generous shade and excellent facilities - including public washrooms, beach volleyball courts and a large playground.

Throughout the summer, lifeguards keep watch over a supervised swimming zone, and water quality is regularly tested to ensure safety.  Whether you’re planning a full-day picnic, bringing kids to play, watching sailboats drift by, or simply relaxing under the sun, Britannia Beach is a must-visit this summer.

4. Petrie Island Beach

Location: East Ottawa (Orleans)
Water: Ottawa River
Lifeguards: Yes

Looking for a little nature with your beach day? Head east toward Orléans to discover Petrie Island, a unique escape perfect for a relaxed beach day. This island is home to three sandy beaches along the Ottawa River, offering plenty of space to spread out and soak up the sun. Whether you’re swimming, sunbathing, or just dipping your toes in, it’s an ideal spot for those who want a more outdoorsy experience.

Petrie Island is also home to over 7 km of walking trails, a wildflower garden, and a turtle pond, offering plenty to explore between swims. It’s the perfect blend of nature and beachside relaxation — all just a short drive from The Docks.

5. Westboro Beach

Location: West Ottawa
Water: Ottawa River
Lifeguards: No (swimming is unsupervised)

Westboro Beach is a cherished west-end spot known for its relaxed atmosphere, scenic river views, and easy access to both nature and city life. Located along the Ottawa River near Westboro Village, the beach has recently undergone a major transformation - and is now fully open to the public.

As of June 2025, the newly redeveloped Westboro Beach pavilion offers a wide range of modern amenities, including changerooms, public washrooms, a café with a patio, updated pathways, and a scenic lookout. It’s a perfect spot to enjoy a swim, grab a coffee, or simply take in the river breeze.

While swimming is permitted, there are no lifeguards on duty, so visitors should swim at their own risk. Still, the beach remains a popular spot for those looking to enjoy a quieter, more self-guided waterfront experience.
